Beautifully located between the rivers Kaveri and Kabini Mysore is the most well visited tourist destination of karnataka. It is the second largest city of Karnataka and located near to the river Cauvery and about 146kms south west of Bangalore, the capital city of this venerable state. This historical city is located at the base of Chamundi Hills along with some beautiful lakes like the Kukkarahalli, the Lingambudhi and the Karanji lakes. The place is mainly ruled by Wodeyar dynasty and had left a great impact on its art and culture of this place. According to legends, Mysore experienced the highest cultural growth during Wodeyar dynasty. The place is ornamented as Cultural capital of Karnataka. The name Mysore is taken from the word Mahishuru means the residence of Mahisha. According to mythology, this place was once ruled by demon Mahishasura who was killed by the Goddess Chamundeshwari. The temple of goddess Chamundeshwari is located on the top of Chamundi Hills and still this goddess is devotionally worshiped by inhabitants. Mysore is beautifully decorated with many beautiful palaces and ancient sculptures. Mysore offers an excellent time during its main festival Dussehra. This festival is grandly celebrated with pomp and grandeur and attracts a huge number of tourists from all over the world. The last day procession is well noticeable along with the decorated elephants and soldiers with their ceremonial attire along with torch lights parade and dance performances. This Dussera celebration was introduced by King Raja Wodeyar I in1610. The other festivals of this place are Pongal, Holi and Deepavali. This place is well known for Mysore style of painting, a unique antique form of painting with classical south Indian style. The uniqueness of this painting is the gold hydrofoils which are pasted in the plaster of Paris work. Apart from this Mysore Pak(a sweet dish) the Mysore Peta (a traditional silk turban) and the Mysore silk sarees are famous with its unique light weight texture. The place still carries its royal charm along with royal-styled houses and authentic cuisine. The cuisine is mainly based of rice and vegetables.\’Upitu\’ , \’Akki roti\’ and \’Bisibelabath\’ are some famous dishes which carries the original aroma of this quintessential cuisine. The place is also marked for Mysore handicrafts and Mysore sandalwood. The place holds a good collection of artefacts made of rose wood and teak wood. Tourists can collect sandalwood products such as, sandalwood perfume, incense sticks sandalwood oil, sandalwood powder and exquisite sandalwood artefacts. The place has a sobriquet-City of Palaces. The most visited attraction is Mysore palace. During the evening time this palace offers a mesmerizing view when the whole palace is lit up with lights. The famous Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion is another important place which became a museum and exhibits the folk culture. The other attractions are Mysore Palace, Brindavan Gardens, St Philomena\’s Church, Chamundeswari Temple Gumbaz, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, Srirangapatnam Fort. The economy of this place mainly depends on the tourism industry but its is also marked as the second largest software exporter of Karnataka. It is well mentioned that Mysore was the first private radio broadcasting station in India.
