A. Turn Old CDs into a Magnetic Picture Frame 1. Take a worn out, cracked or scratched CD, DVD or CD ROM or two that can be used for this activity. Using it as a template, trace around the CD with a pencil to make two circles on a sheet of decorative scrapbook paper. Decide at this point whether you will want your finished frame to have a magnet on the back, or whether it will hang up. If it is to hang up, take some ribbon that will match your scrapbook paper and thread it through the hole in the center of the CD, tying it into a knot or bow an inch or two above the disk. Cut out the two circles and glue them with strong PVA craft adhesive, one on each side of the CD, covering the ribbon if you are using some. 2. While the background is drying, select a suitable photo and use an upside-down teacup to trace a circle on it, trimming the photo to about two thirds the size of the CD. This will allow a border of the background decoration to show around the photo. If possible, select a picture with colors that complement the ribbon and scrapbook print. 3. If the frame is to go on the fridge glue a magnet onto the back. The magnet should be big enough to cover about a quarter of the back area. 4. Allow the frame to dry thoroughly. You may wish to have both a magnet and a hanging ribbon on your frame, especially if you plan to give it as a gift. B. Decorating a Frame with Toilet Paper Tubes 1. Make a photo or picture frame out of thick colored cardstock, and select a suitable picture for it. This project works best for a fairly large frame, but it can be any shape you prefer; square, oblong, oval or round. 2. Take your toilet paper tubes, paper towel or baking product tubes, and cut them into rings no bigger than half an inch thick. 3. Using bright poster paint colors, paint the rings a contrasting color to the cardstock on the frame. Watercolor paints will not be bright enough, but you can use felt-tip markers if preferred. Allow the rings to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. 4. Decide if you want to keep your rings as circles, or if you will press them into other shapes before gluing, such as stars, flower petals or other patterns. Using glue that is not too thin and runny, and that dries clear, arrange your shapes onto the frame for a truly unique picture. C. Foam Frames 1. First choose the picture or photo you wish to frame, and then select a sheet of craft foam in a suitable color. Trim the foam to a slightly larger size than your picture, and cut a second piece the same size. 2. Measure a rectangle size slightly smaller than your photo, and carefully cut this shape out of the center of one of the foam pieces. 3. Decorate this frame with puffy stickers, beads, colored foam shapes, glitter or other embellishments. PVA glue should adhere well to the foam. 4. Carefully glue the picture onto the back of the frame so that it shows through the cut out rectangle. 5. Glue the second piece of foam to the back to give support to your frame, inserting some string between the glued pieces for hanging. 6. Glue a magnet to the back if you wish to display your frame on the fridge. The foam should be light enough for the magnet to hold. D. Juice Lids as Frames 1. Select as many colorful juice bottle lids as you can find, wash them and let them dry. 2. Make cute little portraits by simply gluing smiling faces cut out of photos to the inside of the lids. 3. Add individual magnets to the back of each lid, or cluster the lids together on thick cardstock as a collage. E. Turn an Old Window Frame into a Picture Frame 1. Select an old window frame that is not too large and either clean and repaint it, or rub it back to the timber if it is attractive, and varnish. 2. Check that there are no cracks or blemishes in the glass, replacing the glass if necessary. 3. Have a favorite studio or candid photo enlarged to fit the frame, or make a composite picture using collage techniques.
